The Roar of the Monarchs
February 27-March 6, 2011
Pictures from the 2008 Trip Deep in the oyamel fir forests of Michoacán, Mexico, there is a silent beginning to an amazing show. At the end of October, right around Day of the Dead, the monarch butterflies from all across eastern North America begin to arrive. First a handful of butterflies arrive, then thousands and tens of thousands of them. Slowly a quiet blanket of butterflies forms on the trees – covering them so thickly that people in the area feared they would suffocate the forest.
Every year hundreds of millions of monarch butterflies leave their summer homes in the USA and Canada and journey to the mountains of central Mexico to spend the winter. In the Spring they leave for the north again darkening the sky and filling the
air with the roar of millions of wings.
